Arthur Raymond Chung was the first President of Guyana, serving from 1970 to 1980. He was born on January 10, 1918, in Queenstown, Georgetown, British Guiana, to parents of Chinese descent.

Chung was educated at St. Joseph’s High School and Queen’s College in British Guiana. After graduating, he worked as a clerk in the civil service and later as a teacher.

In 1953, Chung was elected to the Legislative Council of British Guiana. He served as a member of the Council until 1964. In 1966, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of Guyana.

In 1970, Guyana became a republic, and Chung was elected as its first President. He served as President until 1980, when he retired. Chung died on June 23, 2008, at the age of 90.
